all,
obviously, ken and i received it too.
he has some points, i do agree we've become a more contest, general
purpose club through the years.
just the simple fact you don't have to have dxcc to join anymore would
give validity to that.
i've been a member for 20 years now and the dxcc rule was abolished
sometime around my joining (actually, while i was on the board as we
reviewed the outdated and not followed anyway constitution and bylaws).
we dispensed with the band contests for lack of interest and adjusted
our awards to reflect what more of the membership seems interested in.
i had suggested a "gauntlet" a few years back, try to have 100% club
participation to celebrate on of the clubs anniversaries. the idea was
well received but manpower and time precludes many of these things from
getting off the ground.
there definitely are different factions within the club, some just enjoy
the camaraderie and have absolutely no interest in pileups, contests or
dxing.
others enjoy the "technical" aspects of the hobby, field day really
isn't anything more than figuring out better antennas.
i myself enjoy it all (except rtty...hi, hi) and contest and dx (time
allowing, my biggest restraint currently).
excuse me for being blunt but i and many who are serving the
organization don't have unlimited time and are doing the best we can
with the sparse involvement by the membership as a whole.
this isn't unlike every single other group i'm involved with today, 10
folks of 70 do all the work, the other chime in when they get a chance
to have some time to kill.
i don't disagree with gene, his facts are straight, only problem is that
to retain any membership at all, we have to "cater" to several diverse
groups and remember one thing, a fair portion of the club has worked
almost everything, unless the p5 shows up, not too much to get overly
excited about.
it should be discussed but i doubt any particular thing can be changed
to make the club the fully based dx club it once was.
